Spring Waltz
This is the ending series drama to the FOUR SEASON DRAMA SET from Yun Suk Ho.
The SAME PD for Autumn Fairy Tale, Winter Sonata and Summer Scent.
It was year 2000 when i caught his "first season" drama on the television, Autumn Fairy Tale. The drama who introduced many to South Korea, entertainment showbiz and its culture, the hallyu wave initial. He later came up with Winter Sonata in year 2002, shooting Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Won to fame, and receive alot of critics and applause for his new work. Summer Scent in 2003 was a flop though. He chose not to employ a similar childhood plot in the story which many had anticipated.
In Spring Waltz, i knew he was on the safe side when he made the protagonist of the drama friends during childhood times. True enough, i see a close resemblance between Autumn Fairy Tale and Spring Waltz. Other than that, the themes are similar to the ones we heard in Winter Sonata. He combined some of the factors which made his previous work a success. Nonetheless the ratings in the korea did not escalate and stay flat throughout the 20 episodes. I reckoned the killer point is his forte, being draggy.
I like the few earlier episodes alot, especially the lovely snowy scenery in Austria, the portray of their childhood times @ Qingdao which made me sneeze into the tissues for umpteen times and the coincidence that happened to the leads. A pity, in the middle it failed to provide its audiences with stimulants when it reached too many peaks and lows. Its abit of the "oh the stereotype drama." Quadrant Love and obstruction from parents again. Hey dont forget this anyway, its this PD who started the stereotype drama phenomenon. The idea origin from him anyway. Im glad Yun Suk Ho stick to his own style of making a drama, his uniqueness which people had been copying from.
I read that the ratings for Spring waltz is rather low in korea. Probably tv viewers are immuned to melancholic dramas these days. You see happy cheeky dramas with a higher ratings. Or rather due to tense competition, south korean are hooked on to some old time dramas like Ju Moon and hwang Jini that they didnt tune in to Spring Waltz.
Nonetheless you should watch this drama for yourself, its good still. REALLY.
