The advocate was screaming so loud on the newspaper headlines that i cant wait to give the film a go. Managed to squeeze out some time for 881, filmed by Royston Tan, finally. Since the headlines reports, the response had been overwhelming. Like the booking system in the computer mostly show, 70% of the seats were occupied when my sister and i stepped in. Previously, I was trying to book the ticket on sunday and it was 90% full, leaving a few seats here and there in the front rows only. And guess what. It was my first time watching a movie with so many elderly. There were so many uncles & aunties. Its not hard to spot a few white-haired old grannies and grandpa who was seated patiently and appeared a little, a little bit excited. Almost like its their first time to watch a movie in the theatre after almost 30 years since the public-cinema where screening is held in the open. Who knows, the papaya movie might spur more elderly consumers to frequent the cinema to appreciate a movie.
In my humble opinion, 881 is a broadway-comedy in coarse language with sprinkles of eyes-warming moments. Despite all the aced-reviews ive read, ive heard, im grading this movie 3.5 stars. Simple & straightforward plot which is considered a stereotype in the korean entertainment market. A few intentional laugh scenes here and there, you can almost foresee it. A hot-passionate smooching which is deemed as a must for hollywood. Like a ge-tai; the language used is M18/PG. The language problem bore a resemblance to his first movie, 15, which is more crude. Ive managed to peek a little of 15 when my brother is watching it on the PC with his friends last time.
The acting of the cast werent sincere enough, except Mindee Ong's performance. More natural and can see the effort shes putting into the small papaya's role. Employing extras may cost a bomb, but the same extras appeared on the scenes too many times. I felt there are alot of rooms for improvements with the takes/shots. Well, what can i expect for a low-budget movie? Three points to cheer for are 1. the stimulating effect it has on the audiences who were laughing and crying with papayas as the story progressed. 2. The number of classic hokkien songs deported from the ge-tai performances to the screens. 3. Amazing wardrobes & makeups which beautified the papaya sisters.
Wishing "Papaya" success with its overseas debut.
